Understand Hurricane Season
When: Officially runs June 1 – November 30
Peak Months: August – October
Be weather-aware and monitor updates from trusted sources like:
Prepare Your Property
Trim trees and remove yard debris
Bring in patio furniture, umbrellas, planters
Check storm shutters or board windows
Clean gutters and downspouts
Test your generator (if you have one)
Fill propane tanks and fuel vehicles
Photograph your property for insurance
Photograph or save a digital copy of your insurance policy/important numbers on your phone
Build Your Hurricane Supply Kit
Prepare supplies before a storm is near. Essentials include:
Food & Water (3–7 Days)
1 gallon of water per person per day
Non-perishable food (canned goods, granola bars, baby formula)
Manual can opener
Emergency Gear
Flashlights & extra batteries
Portable phone charger (preferably solar or battery backup)
NOAA weather radio
First aid kit
Personal hygiene products
Extra cash (ATMs may not work)
Special Needs
Prescription medications
Pet food/supplies. Always have a plan for your pets!
Important documents in waterproof container (IDs, insurance, deeds)

During the Storm
Stay indoors and away from windows
Do not use candles — stick to battery-powered lights
Monitor local news or radio for updates
Avoid going outside until officials give the all-clear
After the Storm
Avoid downed power lines or flooded areas
Check for gas leaks or structural damage
Take photos of damage for insurance claims
Use generators safely (outdoors, well-ventilated areas)
Know Your Evacuation Zone
If you’re Zone A or B, you’re more likely to evacuate during a hurricane
Plan multiple routes and designate a safe place to go (friend’s home, shelter, or out of county)
How to Apply for Your Homestead Exemption
STEP 1: Confirm Eligibility (as of January 1)
You must:
Be a permanent Florida resident and hold title to the property.
Use the property as your primary residence.
Not be receiving a residency-based exemption elsewhere
STEP 2: Gather Required Documents
For each owner/co-owner/spouse, prepare:
Social Security Number
Florida driver’s license or ID with the homestead address
Florida vehicle registration or voter registration showing that address
Declaration of Domicile, federal tax return, or utility bills matching the homestead address
For non-U.S. citizens: proof of lawful permanent residency
Add your pricing strategy. Be sure to include important details like value, length of service, and why it’s unique.
STEP 3: Key Deadline – March 1
All applications must be submitted no later than March 1 of the tax year to qualify.
Important: Florida law states that failing to apply by March 1 waives your right for that year.
STEP 4: Choose Your Filing Method
You have three ways to apply:
A) Online (E‑File)

Request a PIN, log in, follow prompts, enter your PCN or address, and upload documents.
B) In Person
Visit any of five Palm Beach County Property Appraiser service centers - linked here - https://pbcpao.gov/contact-us.htm
Bring all gathered documentation
Download and complete form DR‑501 (Original Homestead Exemption Application).
Include photocopies of all required documents.

STEP 5: After Filing
If approved, the exemption automatically renews each year unless your ownership, residency, or property use changes.
You’ll receive a pink & white receipt card by the last business day of December.
Notify the Property Appraiser’s Office if you sell, refinance, rent long-term, divorce, or move to avoid a lien.
